Blood in the Bayou treats its readers to the dark and illuminating recollections of a life lived in the heartland of Hoodoo. But it is also a clear, practical guide to every aspect of Southern folk-sorcery, throwing a rare light on the obscure aspects of Hoodoo that are native to the dark soil and mud of the Louisiana swamplands.

In a unique firsthand account of this subject, Docteur Sureaux carries the reader into an understanding of the entangling, serpentine spirit of life and the natural organic metaphysics that underlie the basic precepts of Hoodoo. His words are an accessible and instructive celebration of the soul in the land, the timeless power in the substances used in root-working, the spirits that inhabit this world, and the intricacies of their interactions with the conjure-worker. Sureaux's intimate teachings, and the places they lead the soul of the reader, not only render the magic of Hoodoo possible, but also enable the realization of the ancient vision of life that gave birth to this folk-sorcery in the first place.

Blood in the Bayou eBook Docteur Sureaux

I suspect this is actually by a well known pagan author who usually writes by another name, and who perhaps not coincidentally, also publishes with Pendraig. But unlike his other books, (assuming I'm correct) this book gets straight to the point. Well, almost. The first section is auto-biographical, but also sets up the philosophical background of the practical parts. But the philosophy is presented without bludgeoning you in the head, and sometimes you can almost smell the gumbo cooking, and hear the snakes slithering in the swamp. The second part of the book is my favorite, giving a nuts and bolts spirit-working technology that is totally missing from most books of this sort. The third section has lots of little hoodoo tidbits, allowing you a small but powerful introduction to root working. This is a slim little volume, but I find myself going back again and again to certain parts. I hope this isn't a one-off. I'd love to read more from the author in this vein.

Blood in the Bayou eBook Docteur Sureaux Reviews

rereading this book some things I agree with some I don't. Its okay.
Incredibly well written. I was raised with old time "earth and tradition" educated Root Workers near and dear to me but not close enough to be taught all that I wanted to learn. I totally understood, as a small child my baby sitter was from the bayou and I was a white city child becoming an adult. So much was forbidden but she did take a chance on me and showed me many wonderful rituals and respect for the names she used. I could only be shown a fraction though and like then as a child and still strong today, it felt like a calling. I still have 1000's of questions and a yearning to learn so that the craft and tradition continues, especially in a society that does not hold such things as valuable as they should/need to. This has only inspired my search and I am grateful beyond words for this book.
Wow, what a book! Docteur Sureaux’s description of his family’s history, his growing up in southern Louisiana, his connection from the start with the throbbing, universal aliveness of the swamp and all its creatures, culminating with the story behind the “blood in the bayou” of the title…where the blood came from and the impact it had on the rest of his life…in his introductory chapter, placed the subsequent, almost novelistic, unfolding of the revelation of his practice of sorcery and root work in a context that I have not experienced before in a book about the nuts and bolts of conjure. Quite enchanting. The book itself is an act of sorcery.
I love this book. Especially the way the author makes sure and clear the metaphysical underpinnings of the spirit-matter connection, how everything is one and yet particular in the web of existence that includes non-humans. There's a devout empathy with all things and spirits and I came away trusting Sureaux's recommendations and preferences developed through old knowledge, hard work and commitment. The essays are so encompassing it's easy to forget it's a short-ish, compact book. There's his generosity to Hyatt's work and Yronwode's materia magica; to opening a world to the readers; and a zeal for authenticity, experiment and findings. Then, like a kid in a candy store when they get permission to indulge, being told you need these tools, lots of jars etc, and how to store and care for everything you work with, was bliss. I got a charge from reading this book – it was like visiting a long lost relative you should have known ages ago. I don't know who Docteur Sureaux is or at least I can't find more about him other than the autobio information in the book & publisher's statement. I can guess Docteur is a folk-magician/herbalist as in "root doctor" working with materials to make spiritual changes; Sureaux is like saying "on water". I only hope he writes more than one book because he owns this territory.
